Hastings West District Women's Institutes

The Hastings West Women's Institutes District was organized on 8th January 1901. It covered the Women's Institute branches of Bay of Quinte, Chatterton, Pine Grove, River Valley, Sidney South, Stirling, Uniondale and Wallbridge in Sidney Township, Ontario.

Sherwin, Arthur Francis

Arthur Francis Sherwin, Honorary Colonel, 426 Squadron, born April 19, 1923 and died May 10, 2015. Arthur was born in Coventry, England and earned his pilot's license through the RAF at Fort William, Ontario. He fought bravely in WWII and was shot down on his 20th birthday, April 19, 1943. He was transported to Stalag Luft 3 camp in Germany, the location of "The Great Escape" and was one of the "penguins", spreading the dirt from the tunnels around the compound.

After his military career, where he flew Tiger Moths and Harvards from 1941 - 1947, he immigrated to Canada in 1950 and worked for Ontario Hydro in Telecommunications and Protection and Control. He retired after 33 years to Belleville, Ontario.

Panciuk, Mitch

Mitch Panciuk was elected as a City Councillor of Belleville, Ontario, in October 2014. He became Mayor of the city in December 2018.

Wardle, Roy

Roy Wardle was a firefighter who lived and worked in Belleville, Ontario. He was born in England in 1916 and came to Canada with his family in 1924. He died in Kingston, Ontario on 10 May 1968.

Planovsky, Paul

Taught at Comenius University in Bratislava before Second World War. Served as captain of Slovakian Army under the Soviets during Second World War. Became member of Czechoslovak National Assembly for Democratic Party from 1945 to 1946 subsequently member of Slovak National Council from 1946 to 1948. He was expelled from National Council during 1948 coup by Soviet-backed communists. From 1945 to 1946 he was mayor of Presov. He went into exile in 1948 becoming involved in the Slovak diaspora. He moved to Canada where he worked for Bata Shoe Company. Served as Vice-President of the South Hastings Liberal Association during the 1960s.

Belleville General Hospital. School of Nursing Alumnae Association

The Alumnae Association of the Belleville General Hospital was organized on 31 December 1919, with Mrs. Charles Graham as the first president. Its aim was the promotion of unity and fellowship among graduates of the nursing training school of the hospital.

Lieutenant-Colonel K. D. H. Willcocks was the commanding officer of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment from 1964 to 1967.

Evans, John Dunlop, P.L.S.

John D. Evans was born in Goderich, Ontario on 27 May 1843. He was educated at the Upper Canada College in Toronto. He trained as a land surveyor and moved to Belleville, Ontario, in 1867. He worked as a surveyor and architect, being responsible for a number of buildings in Belleville including what is now City Hall (built 1872-1873). He worked as the Chief Engineer of the Central Ontario Railway from 1881, retiring in 1925. Evans died in Toronto on 7 November 1930.

His son, John Walter Evans was a prominent engineer and surveyor in the City of Belleville.
