Tickell, Lizzie Josephine

Born in Belleville, Ontario on 6 September 1893, Josephine Tickell was the daughter of Joseph Leabon Tickell and Lizzie Williams. She spent her formative years in Belleville where her father owned Tickell & Sons Company, undertakers and manufacturers of furniture and caskets. She graduated from Victoria College at the University of Toronto in 1918 and taught high school in Colborne, Picton, Pembroke and Kingston. She was a member of Bridge Street United Church and was on the Belleville Board of Education from 1946 to 1952, acting as chairman in 1949. She was on the Bay of Quinte High School Board from 1952 to 1959. Josephine Tickell died on 14 September 1985 at the age of 92 in Belleville General Hospital and was buried in Belleville Cemetery. Her last known residence was 254 Church Street in the city of Belleville.

Merry, Nellie Parlane

Nellie Parlane Merry was born on April 30, 1890 in Stratford, Ontario, the daughter of William Merry and Maria Granger. She taught English at Belleville High School and then Belleville Collegiate Institute from 1920 to 1954. From 1929 to 1952 she was head of the English department. Miss Merry was active with the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary for fifteen years, and was a member of the Women's University Club and the United Church. She died in Belleville on August 9, 1987.

Hill, Kenneth Sinclair

Kenneth Sinclair Hill was born on October 11, 1892 in Melrose, Township of Tyendinaga, the son of James Hill and Charlotte Rollins. He was a high school teacher when he enlisted on December 14, 1915 during the First World War. He served overseas with the Medical Corps attached to the Queen's Own Rifles. Mr. Sinclair lived in Madoc and Pembroke for a few years before moving to Belleville in 1923 where he began teaching science at Belleville High School, retiring in 1957 as vice-principal. He married Jennie Curtis Livingstone on July 8, 1924. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, serving as treasurer, a member of the board of trustees and in 1950, elder. In 1967 he wrote a short history of St. Andrew's in Belleville from 1821 to 1967 and was awarded a citation of merit by the Presbyterian Church of Canada. Kenneth Hill died on April 18, 1982.

Ethel Mildred McGuire was born in Wales on May 2, 1896 and immigrated to Canada in 1913. The daughter of Ebenezer and Edith Kate Cooke, she was one of eleven children. Her sister Edith Charlotte Hanna also lived in Belleville. Ethel McGuire married John McGuire on July 10, 1916 in Belleville. Mrs. McGuire was a member of St. Margaret's Anglican Church and the Ladies' Auxiliary, ANAF, Duke of Edinburgh Unit 201. She died on February 8, 1975 in Belleville.

Edith Charlotte Hanna was born in Wales on August 22, 1905 and immigrated to Canada in 1913. She was the daughter of Ebenezer and Edith Kate Cooke and one of eleven children. Her sister Ethel Mildred McGuire also lived in Belleville. On June 6, 1923, she married John Herbert Hanna in Belleville. Edith Hanna was a member of Christ Church and of the Minerva Chapter of the Eastern Star and White Shrine. She died on September 15, 1981 in Belleville.

Clara Agnes McGuinness was born in June, 1896 in Lonsdale, Hastings County, the daughter of James McAuliffe and Letitia Toner. She married Michael Joseph McGuinness on April 6, 1921 at Marysville, Ontario. Her husband ran a grist mill in Lonsdale until 1963. She was a member of Holy Name of Mary Church in Marysville. Agnes McGuinness died on February 23, 1981 in Belleville, Ontario.

Dorothy Annette Walsh was born on December 10, 1912 in Kenora, Ontario. She was the daughter of Leo Mark Chambers and Annie Elizabeth Hamilton. Dorothy Walsh was predeceased by her husband, Ralph. She was educated at the University of Saskatchewan (B.A.). Mr. and Mrs. Walsh lived for some time in Deloro, Hastings County where he worked as manager of the smelting plant. They later moved to Belleville. Dorothy Walsh was a member of Bridge Street United Church in Belleville and a member of the University Women's Club of Belleville. She died on December 4, 1977 in Belleville.

Mrs. Eva Barlow, wife of Clinton Barlow, arrived in Deloro, Hastings County, in 1922 and lived there until 1949 when she and her husband moved to Belleville. She went to school in Gananoque and studied at the Kingston Business College to be a secretary. Clinton Barlow was a chemist at the Deloro Smelting and Refining Company. Eva Barlow died on December 17, 2000.

Johnson, John Wesley

John Wesley Johnson was born in Antrim, Ireland on 17th January 1846. He came to Canada in 1846 and worked for four years as a purser on Great Lakes steamships. He joined the Ontario Business College and was president of that institution for 42 years. He played an active part in politics, becoming a member of Belleville City Council in 1885 and serving as Mayor from 1897 to 1900. In 1908 he was elected president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for Ontario and also Member of the Provincial Parliament of Ontario. He served as MPP until his death in Belleville on 11th March 1919. In February 1917 he was responsible for introducing the Bill which gave the vote to white women in Ontario.

Eliza Irene Haig was born on September 7, 1908 in Morrisburg, the daughter of Charles Seymour and Ella Hummell. She was raised in Morrisburg and Brockville, and later graduated from Queen's University. She married John McLean Haig. She was known as Harriet Stevens to CJBQ listeners and Intelligencer readers. Mrs. Haig spent several years in the children's branch of the Belleville Public Library. She was a member of the University Women's Club and the Business and Professional Women's Club, representing the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women in 19159 at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She was a founding member of the Hastings County Historical Society and a member of the Bridge Street United Church Choir. She died on April 15, 2003.
