“New Names at Least Can Hide the Truth” - article 1966

File contains a newspaper clipping from 1966 about changing the name of geographic features between Belleville and Trenton in order to help remove bigotry in Canada; these sites were given names considered offensive today and have “no place in the geographic nomenclature. The article discusses a letter signed by J. Keith Fraser, executive secretary, Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographic Names, Geographical Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa.

Hastings County: House of Refuge and Industrial Farm

File contains motions from Hastings County Council meetings from 1869-1870 regarding the establishment of an Industrial Farm and Poor House in Belleville. There is also a copy of the “Second Annual Report of the Inspector of the House of Industry & Refuge for the County of Waterloo, 1869” that may have been used in the discussions.

Hastings County Museum Official Opening 1961

File contains letters regarding the official opening of the Hastings County Museum in 1961, several invitations to the opening, and a newspaper article discussing the opening. There are two booklets listing artists in Hasting and Prince Edward County, a handout from the Hastings County Museum with directions to Glanmore, and a poster from 1975 promoting a talk by Mary Beacock Fryer (author of Loyalist Spy). There is also an itinerary from 1961 for a trip to Upper Canada Village. There is also a pamphlet about Glanmore.

Hastings Court House 1958-59, 1960-61

File contains newspaper clippings regarding the construction of the new Court House in Belleville such as: who the construction contract was awarded to, the cornerstone ceremony, work being carried out in winter, temporary location of staff, etc. There is also an invitation sent to Mr. Gerald Boyce to attend the Official Opening of the new court house in 1961.
