North, Preston John

Preston John North was born in Brigg, Lincolnshire, England, the child of Frank and Jane North. He married Martha Maria Little in Brigg on 15 June 1884 and the couple had at least eight children. In 1915 North was living in Kingston, Ontario, where he married Chloe Ann Lalond on 19 June. He signed up in Deseronto to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in February 1916, claiming to be 44 (he was 57). He was returned to Canada in 1917 as being over age. North died in Deseronto in September 1944.

Pierce, John Gourlay, O.L.S.

John Pierce was born at Pembroke, Ontario in 1918. He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and graduated in 1941 with a B.Sc. (Eng.). The following year he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers Italian and European campaigns (1942-1945). In this role, he received the Military Cross. During his surveying career John sat on many Ontario Land Survey boards and completed numerous surveys of Ontario areas. He died in 2003.

Haslett, John James, P.L.S. & D.P.S.

John James Haslett was born on June 17, 1811 at Sanfield House, Tyrone County, Ireland, the child of Matthew Haslett and Sarah McCrae. He received his education to be a surveyor in Ireland, and later when on to survey England and the south coast of Ireland. Around 1842, he came to Canada. After six months of training with P.L.S. John Emerson, he became a Provincial Land Surveyor. He then moved to Belleville, Ontario and began surveying Upper Canada. In February 1851, he married Frances Colhoun Woods. He died in Belleville on January 21, 1878 leaving his wife, four sons and three daughters.

William Elmore was born in about 1830 to father Publius V. Elmore - a surveyor active in Hastings County. He married Victoria Counter, daughter of the mayor of the City of Kingston (John Counter). He lived in Buffalo and then in Philadelphia. He played a role the development of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway.

John Lawrence Power O'Hanly was born in Waterford, Ireland on 24 June 1827. He emigrated to Canada in 1846 and trained as a land surveyor. He died in Ottawa on 22 March 1912.

Henry MacLeod was born in Drynoch, Scotland on 29 May 1832. He came to Canada in 1845 and became a civil engineer and land surveyor. He married Emily Murney of Belleville in 1867. MacLeod died in Ottawa on 28 June 1919.

William Wallbridge was born on July 13, 1825 to parents Asa Wallbridge and Hannah Every, in Clarke Township, Durham County, Ontario. He received his land surveying license, in Ontario, on January 8, 1853. He died of scarlet fever on February 3, 1863.

William's grandfather was the local pioneer Elijah Wallbridge.

Thomas F. Gibbs was born around 1804, the son of Thomas David Gibbs and Agnes Fraser. He became a land surveyor in Kingston, Ontario. He died on 17 April 1893.

Carre, Henry, O.L.S.

Henry Carre was born in Glencollumkill, County Donegal, Ireland on 25 October 1833. He came to Canada in 1857 and qualified as a Provincial Land Surveyor in 1861. He settled in Belleville, Ontario and married Louisa deQuincy Lundy in 1866. He died in Belleville on 11 July 1918.

David Matthew Bews was born on May 20, 1932 in Belleville, Ontario to parents Douglas and Aline Bews. He attended Queen Alexandra elementary school and Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. In 1951, he moved to Kingston, Ontario where he earned his BSc in Civil Engineering at Queen's University. After graduating, Bews joined the Ontario Department of Highways and became an Ontario Land Surveyor. He married Ethel Green on June 8, 1963. He died in Belleville on March 28, 2017.
