Biographical history

Ernest Stewart Newport arrived in Canada in 1896 with a party of children on the SS Scotsman under the care of Rev. Robert Wallace of the Marchmont Home in Belleville. In the 1901 census he was living in South Fredericksburgh, Ontario as the adopted son of Lois Vanderwater. Lois died on 22 January 1915 and Newport moved to Deseronto, where he started The Deseronto Post newspaper. He married Nyeta Luella Windover in Napanee on 18 January 1917 and died of Spanish flu in Deseronto on 3 November 1918.
