Archival history

The collection was donated to the Hastings County Historical Society by Mika Publishing on December 29th, 1995 and January 9th, 1997. Part of it (MG 1.1.2) came to the Society via the Belleville Public Library. Materials relating to other Ontario municipalities were distributed to collecting institutions in those areas in 2000.

Scope and content

The collection reflects the publishing interests of Nick and Helma Mika. It comprises four main series: photographic files, reference files, printing process files and other materials. The collection is strong in local history materials, particularly relating to the history of the United Empire Loyalists, railways, and the city of Belleville.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling

Additional personal Mika materials were donated by Carol Thompson in 2008 (2008-14) and added to the collection under the number MG 1.4. A note on this accession record states that the executor of the Mika's estate was Laura Jones.

System of arrangement

Wherever possible, the Mikas' filing system was preserved. Newspapers were incorporated into the Historical Society's newspaper collection.
