Fonds consists of records pertaining to Earl Gilbert Wheeler of the 13th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force. The folders are composed of personal letters to Gunner Wheeler's friends and family written while he was stationed at various posts throughout World War I. It also includes financial documents, educational certificates and other professional and personal papers. In addition to these records, documents containing correspondence about his injury, the search for his whereabouts, as well as his death certificate.

First World War photographs

Photographs of military personnel, taken during the First World War. Some are signed 'R.G.S.', including a photograph of the Halifax Explosion. The collection also includes a set of Ottawa street scenes.

Individuals identified in the photographs include: Jim Parm, Petty Officer Pace, Ted Lazier, Ted Wallbridge, Keith Petepiece, Reg Stevens [probably Reginald Garnet Stevens, 1896-1971, the R.G.S. who took the photographs], P. Domville, Colonel W. J. McEllinny.

Ottawa street scenes depict: Parliament Hill, Lovers Walk, Government House, Chateau Laurier, the Eastern Departmental Block, Interprovincial Bridge, City Hall Square, the Rideau Canal locks.

The First World War photograph album contains about 164 black and white or sepia photographs, 1 cartoon entitled "The same old moon", 1 coloured pencil sketch of a nurse. The album is Kodak's "Gallia" model (32.5x26x2cm) in plain black, textured leatherette. The photographs vary greatly in size from 21 x 14.5 cm to 8.5 X5.9 cm. About 40 of the photographs are signed either "E.R. Owen" or "E.R.O.". The first photograph is marked in pencil, "Donor G.B.Waters". Many of the photographs depict the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Red Cross Hospital in Cliveden, England. Many images depict the hospital at the time of a visit by King George V and Queen Mary, a visit by Sir Robert Borden, and a visit by Winston Churchill. There are images of the hospital wards both indoors and out, the cafeteria, the linen supply, and many patients (a lot of the patients seem to be wearing special issue hospital shoes) and nurses. Subjects include: nurses of the Canadian Army Medical Corps; funerals; women ambulance drivers; trenches, military hospitals.

The second album dates from 1916 to 1921. Identified locations include: Athabaska Hall; Banff (Alberta); Red Deer; Lake St. Helena; Edmonton; Sylvan Lake; Mount Royal; Montreal (from M.G.H.); Fort William [Thunder Bay]; Lake of the Woods; Moose Jaw; Markerville; Innisfail; New York. There are several photographs of farm scenes and some of medical personnel in white coats, holding human bones.

The third album includes photographs taken at a graduation at McGill University in Montreal; scenes of Niagara Falls; photographs of cars; two photographs of hospital rooms.

This collection also includes an annual report for Kingston General Hospital, 1906; a brochure for Queen's University Hospital in Cairo, c.1915; five panoramic postcards of Le Tréport, France, c.1915; a letter from 'Elsa' of Dickson, Alberta to Ivy, Clifford and Lloyd, discussing her new job as head of a teacher training department in Ethiopia, dated 5 August 1946, and two sheets of song lyrics for the following songs:

Miles family correspondence

The fonds consists of 48 letters written during World War I, transcriptions of the letters, 1 CD and a book titled 'Just a Few Lines: A Memoir of William Thomas Miles from the Great War, 1916-1919'. The book is written by Thomas N. Miles and William J. Miles, Will Miles' sons and is based on this collection of letters. 47 of the letters are from Will Miles to his mother and 1 is from his cousin Maud to Will Miles. The letters are written between Sept. 30, 1916 and Feb. 18, 1919. Most of the letters are sent from France with a few of them sent from England, Barriefield Camp and Bramshott Camp. The letters discuss Will Miles' day to day life being a soldier during WWI, Flanders mud, lice, hunger and poison gas, meeting girls, complaining of the the food he eats, people being injured or sick, himself being injured, the weather, thanks for receiving parcels, running into old friends and looking forward to coming home in 1918.

Ponton (family)

W. C. Mikel records

This collection represents materials originating or used by W.C. Mikel. The first folder contains three speeches delivered during his time as Police Magistrate and Mayor. The next series of folders contains references and sources for his volume The City of Belleville History. The second folder contains correspondence regarding the book. Folders three through ten contain the notes Mikel used for each chapter. Folder eleven contains the plans for “Quinte City" and documents from the Town Planning Institute among others. Folder twelve contains unattributed reference material and general research for the book. Folder thirteen contains Mikel's collection of material for the 1924 United Empire Loyalist celebration which was held during his first term as Mayor. Folder fourteen contains Mrs. Mikel's obituary, a letter from Mikel to the Bank of Montreal, and a letterhead from the period he served as Police Magistrate. Folder fifteen contains three copies of his book, Godlove Mikel. The sixtenth folder contains a variety of newspaper clippings.
