The Intelligencer : early history

File contains an Ontario Intelligencer article dated 14 June 1924 concerning the establishment and early history of the Weekly Intelligencer [later Ontario Intelligencer]. This issue of the newspaper is available online at https://archive.org/details/intelligencer-june-1924/page/n85/mode/2up . Also present is a typescript genealogy of the family of George Benjamin who started the newspaper in 1834. The genealogy was prepared by Ruby Milburn, granddaughter of George and Isabella Benjamin.

Plainfield : miscellany

File contains a newspaper clipping from the Ontario Intelligencer, 14 April 1959 concerning the election of officers of the Plainfield Women's Institute. Also includes an obituary of Harry McCreary, Plainfield, telephone pioneer and former owner-operator of the McCreary Telephone Company who created early rural telephone lines in Thurlow and Sidney Townships. Also present is a duplicate copy of a printed booklet entitled “Progress Report : Ontario Homes for Mentally Retarded Infants, Plainfield, May 1951-December 1965. “

Newspapers : Seaview Gazette: 1892-1894

File contains a photocopied manuscript set of volumes 1 and 2 of The Seaview Gazette, a newsletter produced by members of the 'Bancroft Clan' in Belleville, Ontario, for the period June 1892 to April 1893. Also included are photocopied printed monthly issues of the publication August 1893 to June 1894. The issues largely focus on social news, visits and community events. Also present is a letter of 28 September 1966 from Wlliam F.E. Morley, Curator, Special Collections Queen's University, Kingston to Gerald Boyce accompanying the transmission of the copies.

File contains a manuscript petition of James Thompson Belleville, owner of The Independent newspaper to the County Council of Hastings, soliciting business from the Council. Also contains three manuscript printing and advertising requisitions from the Corporation of the County of Hastings, 1860-1865.

File contains a prospectus of the Belleville Printing and Publishing Co. concerning the publication and circulation of The Chronicle, and the offer of shares. Also contains manuscript statements of account of the Hastings Chronicle for advertising and printing costs incurred by the County Council of Hastings in 1856-1867.

File contains manuscript and completed printed invoices relating to the printing and publication services of the Intelligencer. Also present is a printed card containing the annual “Address of the Carrier Boy of the Intelligencer to his patrons," 1861, and an undated typescript circular letter to subscribers and prospective subscribers concerning a contest for an automobile.
