Marmora Township North : history

File contains a photocopied manuscript memoir by Gertrude Hay Caverly, relating her experiences as an early settler in northern Marmora Township and describing conditions in the township ca. 1850-1857. Submitted to Gerry Boyce for his book, Historic Hastings.

Mayo Township : history

File contains a photocopied typescript history of Mayo Township from its settlement in 1858 to ca. 1906. Also contains an excerpt from the 1889 Hastings County Directory, listings Mayo and Carlow Township land owners by concession. Also contains a newspaper clipping concerning the history of McArthur's Mill to 1934.

Levisconte papers

File contains manuscript probate documents relating to the estate of Henry Le Vesiconte [Levisconte], Captain in the Royal Navy and later gentleman farmer, and a manuscript last will and testament of Sarah Le Vesiconte, widow of Henry Le Vesiconte, 1856. Also contains a typescript excerpts from the Diary of Captain Le Visconte recounting his voyage to Belleville from England and describing conditions in Belleville upon his arrival in 1835.

Hastings County: House of Refuge and Industrial Farm

File contains motions from Hastings County Council meetings from 1869-1870 regarding the establishment of an Industrial Farm and Poor House in Belleville. There is also a copy of the “Second Annual Report of the Inspector of the House of Industry & Refuge for the County of Waterloo, 1869” that may have been used in the discussions.
