Smith family photograph album

The photographs include members of the Smith family. Some were taken in Napanee, Belleville, Brighton and Deseronto, Ontario, others in Watertown and Carthage, New York and Plainwell, Michigan.

Information from Eric and Linda Wilde shows that many of these individuals are descendants of Samuel See (1808-1854) and his sister Ann (1803-1871), who married Benjamin Smith (1808-1895). They were born in England and settled in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario.

File contains a petition to the Councillors of Hastings County from the inhabitants of Dungannon and Faraday Townships concerning the division of the townships into three school sections. Also contains a directive from the Municipal Council, Hastings County concerning fencing in Dungannon and Faraday Townships.

4) Nov 1882 letter to Reuben Cronk from J. N. Emerson complaining about boys interrupting rehearsals at the school in Deseronto

1) Large family studio photograph showing a man, woman, four boys and a girl
2) W. E. Johnson of Picton studio photograph of three children: Hazel Annie Cole, aged 3 years and 5 months; Murney Nelson Cole, aged 1 year, 9 months; Edna Kathleen Cole, aged 6 months. Hazel was born July 27 1910 in Milford, Prince Edward County – dating the picture to late 1913/early 1914.
3) Felted piece of wood with memorial plaque ‘The Gates Ajar’ and the name ‘Eliza Dodge, 42 years, 4 mons, 14 days’

Copies of photographs:

  1. Ebenezer Arthur Rixen of Deseronto, Ontario. Rixen was born in London, England on February 5th, 1857, the son of James Rixen and Elizabeth (née Moore). He married Ellen Gault in Deseronto on November 5th, 1884 and died in Thomas Street, Deseronto on June 10th, 1928. He was buried in the Deseronto Cemetery. Rixen was an accountant and insurance agent. He served as Mayor of Deseronto in 1917 and 1918.
  2. Ellen Rixen (née Gault) of Deseronto, Ontario. Ellen was born in Mill Point (Deseronto) in 1862, the daughter of John and Sarah Gault. She married Ebenezer Arthur Rixen in Deseronto on November 5th, 1884. She died on April 4th, 1955 and was buried in the Deseronto Cemetery.

File contains photocopied manuscript lists of officers and soldiers of "A" and "H" Companies of the Midland Battalion of Infantry who served in the Northwest Rebellion in 1885. Individuals are listed by name, age, marital status, and place of origin in Hastings County. Originally part of the W. C. Mikel collection.
