This description is for part of a collection of some 4,400 vertical files of materials gathered by the Hastings County Historical Society. They cover a wide range of subjects and were received from a variety of different sources, not always recorded.
The collection includes original materials, newspaper clippings, secondary histories and copies.
File contains newspaper clippings from The Ontario Intelligencer concerning the opening of Ste. Anne Church and separate school at Point Anne in June, 1956. Also present is an Intelligencer article 30 December 1967 concerning layoffs at The Canada Cement Company, the principal employer in Point Anne.
File contains several typescript and manuscript poems including “Chapleau Boys” which recounts shanty life in Renfrew County. Also present is a newspaper reprint of a poem entitled “The Maple and the Beaver,” by Charles Andrew Tupper which appeared in the Cobourg Sentinal-Star, 12 August 1964.
File contains a typescript Report of the International Plowing Match, 1961 by the local committee of the Hastings County Plowmen's Association. The report provides an overview of the events and reports by various committees involved in the planning and execution of the plowing match. A one-page financial statement of revenues and expenses is included.

File contains a special edition of The Ontario Intelligencer, 3 October 1961, devoted to the opening ceremonies and daily programs of events of the International Plowing Match, which was hosted by Belleville and Hastings County.
File contains printed promotional material for the 1961 International Plowing Match including an official programme of events, and a programme for a banquet held at the Belleville Armouries, 6 October 1961. Also present are three photocopied pages of programmes, badges and entry passes; a silk ribbon bearing the inscription “International Plowing Match, City of Belleville, County of Hastings"; and a silk ribbon badge for International Plowing Match official, T.G. Wrightmeyer.
File contains a typescript list of the location of exhibits by companies and organizations for the October 1961 International Plowing Match in Hastings County. Also present are three printed, coloured banners for the plowing match.
File contains typescript correspondence, reports and planning documents relating to the preparation for the 1961 International Plowing Match in 1961. Includes list of officers and local committee members. Also present are: a printed official programme and prize list, printed pamphlets and a poster for the International Plowing Match which was held at the Farley Vermilyea Farm and neighbouring farms north of Belleville, October 4-7, 1961.
File contains a newspaper article from the Ontario Intelligencer, 8 December 1960 concerning the selection of an area outside of Belleville for the 1961 International Plowing Match, to be held on October 4-7, 1961. Also present are three printed, numbered admission tickets to the Ploughing Match, 1961.
File contains several newspaper clippings regarding visits and social events in Plevna in January-February, 1968. Also present is a clipping from The Tweed News, 10 July 1968 concerning the history of the Plevna United Church from its founding in 1886 as a Methodist Church.
File contains a newspaper clipping entitled “Religion in pioneer days,” by Viva Richmond Graham, concerning early Protestant churches in Prince Edward, Lennox and Addington and Dundas Counties in the period 1815-1882.
File contains a newspaper clipping from the Ontario Intelligencer, 14 April 1959 concerning the election of officers of the Plainfield Women's Institute. Also includes an obituary of Harry McCreary, Plainfield, telephone pioneer and former owner-operator of the McCreary Telephone Company who created early rural telephone lines in Thurlow and Sidney Townships. Also present is a duplicate copy of a printed booklet entitled “Progress Report : Ontario Homes for Mentally Retarded Infants, Plainfield, May 1951-December 1965. “

Also present is an article from The Intelligencer, 23 March 1970 profiling Leonora Velleman, retiring superintendent of nurses at the Ontario Homes for Mentally Retarded Children at Plainfield.
File contains an Ontario Intelligencer article dated 20 March 1961 concerning Konrad Piwowarski, an artist and former Polish intelligence agent residing in Belleville, whose paintings were commissioned by a local church.

File contains original correspondence and receipts regarding the estate of David Pitceathly who owned and operated J.E.Walmsley & Co. Importers and Wholesale Grocers.
File contains a typed story, entitled "A Pioneer's Story, The Hardships of the U.E.Loyalists", it is an account of the early life of settlers in the district from an old resident (unknown) of Belleville.
