Ponton (family)

Deseronto Archives photographic collection

The photographs are arranged by subject matter and cover activities in and around the town of Deseronto, Ontario. The majority date from the late nineteenth century and many depict the lumber-related industries of the Rathbun Company in Deseronto. There are also photographs of school groups, churches, railways, First World War airfields and portraits of Deseronto citizens.

Fonds consists of records pertaining to Earl Gilbert Wheeler of the 13th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force. The folders are composed of personal letters to Gunner Wheeler's friends and family written while he was stationed at various posts throughout World War I. It also includes financial documents, educational certificates and other professional and personal papers. In addition to these records, documents containing correspondence about his injury, the search for his whereabouts, as well as his death certificate.

Scrapbook compiled by Alice Deacon of 107 Station Street, Belleville, 1914-1919, including newspaper cuttings about Belleville servicemen, theatre programmes and flyers, postcards. The book used to paste the clippings into was Richardson's New Method for the Piano-Forte. The collection also includes 'The Canadian Forces in the Great War' by Colonel A. Foretescue Duguid, 1947, stamped 'Belleville Poppy Committee' on the front cover, 14pp.

Photographs of military personnel, taken during the First World War. Some are signed 'R.G.S.', including a photograph of the Halifax Explosion. The collection also includes a set of Ottawa street scenes.

Individuals identified in the photographs include: Jim Parm, Petty Officer Pace, Ted Lazier, Ted Wallbridge, Keith Petepiece, Reg Stevens [probably Reginald Garnet Stevens, 1896-1971, the R.G.S. who took the photographs], P. Domville, Colonel W. J. McEllinny.

Ottawa street scenes depict: Parliament Hill, Lovers Walk, Government House, Chateau Laurier, the Eastern Departmental Block, Interprovincial Bridge, City Hall Square, the Rideau Canal locks.

Letter from Frederick Manlis Miller to Thomas Henry Coppin, agent, informing him that Miller had enlisted for active service. Several pages and printouts of 2013 research by Richard Hughes on Miller's family history. Also a copy of a newspaper article on a family history story relating to Hughes' grandmother in England and Belleville mayor George Zegouras, with a copy of a photograph of Zegouras and Hughes.

J. Allan Smith Royal Flying Corps Training Camps Collection

Collection comprises photographs of the two First World War Royal Flying Corps training camps at Deseronto, Ontario and notes for an unpublished book, 'Wings Over Deseronto', on the history of the camps. Camp Mohawk and Camp Rathbun were in operation between May 1917 and November 1918, training men to be pilots for the Western Front. The photographs in this collection are originals and reproductions depicting the aircraft, staff and cadets of the Royal Flying Corps, principally in the Deseronto camps, but also at Camps Borden and Leaside (Ontario) and Camp Taliaferro, in Fort Worth, Texas.
