Hastings Jail : bills for lunacy certificate, R. Holden, Druggist

File contains manuscript resolutions and sheets for expenditures for the County Jail, including examination and certificates of lunacy. Also contains a manuscript report of the “Committee of inquiry into the duties of the gaoler [jailer] and the management of the county gaol jail],” June, 1856.

Hastings County Jail 1863

File contains County of Hastings financial records from the County Gaol (Jail) in 1863. There is also a letter from a Grand Jury inspection regarding the condition of the jail and treatment the jailers receive; there is a recommendation that employment for prisoners while in jail should be available because it is believed “keeping them there in a state of idleness has no good effect in preventing crime”.

Rebellion Losses Claim #22 : Patrick Hughes, innkeeper

File contains a manuscript petition submitted to Commissioners of the District of Victoria by Patrick Hughes, Belleville, for the loss of horses due to infection as a result of their use in 1839 in connection with events related to the Rebellion. Also contains a manuscript deposition of Hugh [Jones?] who appeared before the District of Victoria magistrate in 1845 in support of Patrick Hughes' claim and that of John Hughes, Marmora, regarding the same loss.
