1972 copy of an 1837 plan of 'Diseronca' (now Deseronto, Ontario), surveyed by G.J. Clapp on August 26th, 1837. The plan is Plan 43 of the plans registered in the Hastings County Registry.

The north-south streets shown on the right side of the map are, from right to left, First Street, Second Street, Third Street and Fourth Street. Near the end of Fourth Street a wharf is marked on the map. This is Culbertson's Wharf.

This copy was made in 1972 of plan 84, as registered in the Hastings Land Registry Office.

File contains original petition to incorporate Mill Point into an "Incorporated Village" 17 May1871, signed by Edward Wilkes Rathbun and 100 residents of the village. There are also petitions of protest from residents north of the York Road [Highway 2] who did not want to be part of the village. File also includes a plan of the proposed boundaries Mill Point (Map M440-1446).

Plan signed by William R. Aylsworth, P.L.S. and dated March 26, 1885.

Scanned image of a certificate of first communion and confirmation for Virginia Houle (1874-1944), the donor's grandmother. She received her first communion in Deseronto, Ontario, in August 1885 [at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church] and was confirmed in Napanee, Ontario on November 3rd, 1887 [at St. Patrick's Catholic Church].

The certificate was printed by L. Turgis, 60 Rue Des Ecoles, Paris.

  1. Ebenezer Arthur Rixen of Deseronto, Ontario. Rixen was born in London, England on February 5th, 1857, the son of James Rixen and Elizabeth (née Moore). He married Ellen Gault in Deseronto on November 5th, 1884 and died in Thomas Street, Deseronto on June 10th, 1928. He was buried in the Deseronto Cemetery. Rixen was an accountant and insurance agent. He served as Mayor of Deseronto in 1917 and 1918.
  2. Ellen Rixen (née Gault) of Deseronto, Ontario. Ellen was born in Mill Point (Deseronto) in 1862, the daughter of John and Sarah Gault. She married Ebenezer Arthur Rixen in Deseronto on November 5th, 1884. She died on April 4th, 1955 and was buried in the Deseronto Cemetery.

Materials relating to the Hill, Powless and Smith families of Deseronto and Tyendinaga

  1. Photo of Lucinda Hill wiith her children (from left): Susan, Elizabeth and James, and her grand-daughter, Elsie (Elizabeth's daughter). Lucinda was born on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in around 1843, the daughter of Isaac and Catherine Hill and she married another Isaac Hill. By the time of the 1871 census she was a widow, living with her three children (Elizabeth, 10, James, 8 and Susan 5) in the household of her nephew, William Claus. Elsie was 15 at the time of the 1901 census, when she was living in Deseronto, Ontario with her mother and grandmother. In the photograph, she looks about five or six years old, which would date the portrait to around 1892. The photo was taken by Herbert A. Osborne, who was active in Deseronto in the mid-1890s. The image has damaged edges and is broken into two pieces.

Minute book of the Canadian Order of Foresters, Court Quinte No. 1. The fraternal society met in Deseronto, Ontario. The minutes record applications for membership of the society, payments of bills and notes of people who addressed the group. There are some loose papers inside the volume, mainly applications for admission, with reports of character committees on the back.

Steady Gleaners' signature quilt

A red and white quilt made in 1894 by the Steady Gleaners, a group of women affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, Deseronto, Ontario, possibly with the aim of raising funds for missionary work. This quilt may have been made for such a purpose. The signatures of the women in the society are embroidered onto the squares of the quilt.
