Biculturism 1918

File contains a newspaper clipping regarding a speech made by W.C. Mikel at the Lions Club regarding the “Better Understanding” movement in Canada (seeking better understanding between English and French and East and West), and a transcription of speeches at the “Better Understanding” meeting held at Belleville on 25 and 26 July 1918.

“New Names at Least Can Hide the Truth” - article 1966

File contains a newspaper clipping from 1966 about changing the name of geographic features between Belleville and Trenton in order to help remove bigotry in Canada; these sites were given names considered offensive today and have “no place in the geographic nomenclature. The article discusses a letter signed by J. Keith Fraser, executive secretary, Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographic Names, Geographical Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa.

Quakers

File contains two newspaper articles; one dated 22 December 1888 titled "The Society of Friends" about Quakers, one dated 11 May 1957 "No Chancel, No Altar, No Choirloft or Organ at the Quakers' Meeting House".

Tyendinaga - Mohawk Reserve

File contains a souvenir booklet published by the 1960-1961 Council of Tyendinaga Indian Reserve, Deseronto, that contains stories and photos of the local Mohawk people. The file also contains a brief history entitled "Mohawks of Tyendinaga Reserve" written by Susan Claus, as well as a copy of Gerry Boyce's chapter on the "Tyendinaga Reserve" from Historic Hastings, annotated by Leslie Claus.

Tyendinaga - Parish of St. Charles Read

File contains brief history of the Parish of St. Charles Borromeo in Read as well as two newspaper clippings from the Intelligencer, one dated 20-August-1968 titled "Burial Site of Early Anglican Catechist Who Served Mohawks Is Rediscovered" and the other dated 27-November-1968 titled "Parish Centre of Tyendinaga Mohawks Endowed with Historical Significance".

Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.)

File contains a copy of a "Paper on Parlor Meetings for the W.C.T.U." written by Mrs. Williams and dated September 1914. The file also contains other various material pertaining to the temperance movements, such as pledge cards, quotes, Sunday School pledge card, fliers and a prohibition small map of part of the Province of Ontario.
