History

Harold Douglas Bateman was born in Belleville, Ontario on 26 March 1896, the child of Robert Bateman and Blanche (Fuller). He married Beryl Isabel Hendricks in November 1918 and the couple had one son. Harold worked for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and as an insurance agent. He was elected as an alderman for the City of Belleville, but resigned after taking on the role of Assessor for the City in 1937. In 1940 he was appointed City Comptroller and in 1953 he became Clerk-Comptroller. He was one of the founders of the Association of Assessing Officers of Ontario in 1941 and became its president. He suffered a heart attack and died at his home, 246 George Street, on 9 June 1955.
