Pierce, John Gourlay, O.L.S.

John Pierce was born at Pembroke, Ontario in 1918. He attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and graduated in 1941 with a B.Sc. (Eng.). The following year he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers Italian and European campaigns (1942-1945). In this role, he received the Military Cross. During his surveying career John sat on many Ontario Land Survey boards and completed numerous surveys of Ontario areas. He died in 2003.

Bishop, Harry Curry, O.L.S.

Curry Bishop was born at Niagara on the Lake in 1931, to parents Harry (Doc) Bishop and Viola Curry. Curry graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto. He soon became an Ontario Land Surveyor, a Canadian Land Surveyor, and completed post graduate work in planning. He was employed in Haliburton in the surveying and development business. He later became president of the Kawartha-Haliburton region of Ontario Land Surveyors. Curry is married to Aldyth and they have three children.

Watson, Walter Irvine, O.L.S.

Walter Irvine Watson was born in 1929 to parents William and Nellie Watson. He was authorized in 1960 by the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors. He later purchased the notes and records of John T. Ransom, an Ontario Land Surveyor, who had surveyed southern Hastings County since 1948. He soon founded Watson Land Surveyors Ltd., a surveying firm in Belleville, Ontario. He worked on developing the east end of Belleville, the 401, the Quinte Mall, the Sears Warehouse, and subdivision development north of the 401. He died on March 2nd, 2008, at Belleville, Ontario, in his 79th year.

McKergow, Frank Chester, O.L.S.

Frank Chester McKergow was born on January 10, 1912 at Waterloo, Quebec, Canada. He attended University of Bishops’ College in Lennoxville, Quebec and subsequently the Royal Military College and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. McKergow enlisted in the Governor General’s Foot Guards, later the 21st Canadian Armoured Regiment, and travelled overseas in October 1942. He saw action in Holland, Belgium and Germany. He returned to Canada in January 1946. McKergow studied surveying and eventually joined the Department of Lands and Forests, now the Ministry of Natural Resources, as an Ontario Land Surveyor. His main task was to survey base and meridian lines in the far northwest of Ontario.
In 1964 he became Supervisor of Crown Surveys, retiring 11 years later in 1975. His wife was Hazel Pitt Burton. He died on August 18th 2008 at Bolton, Ontario. He was 96.

Smith, Campbell Taylor, O.L.S.

Campbell Taylor Smith was born on July 13, 1890 in Sarnia, Lambton County, Ontario, to parents Thomas T. Smith and Mary McBride. Throughout his career he worked as a civil engineer and as an Ontario Land Surveyor. He married Verna Lucetta Hetherington (a school teacher) on June 29, 1925 at St. Catharines, Ontario. He died on 8 March 1972.

Berkeley, Garnet Lawrence, O.L.S.

Garnet Lawrence Berkeley was born on May 4, 1890 in Belleville, Ontario, to parents John Alfred Berkeley and Ellen Catharine Zufelt. He married his wife, Gertrude Louise Butler, on June 22, 1912 in York, Ontario. Prior to enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was employed as a land surveyor and civil engineer. On April 1, 1916 he joined the 4th Divisional Cyclists Company as a Captain. At some point in his time overseas, he acquired a hand and knee injury from a motorcycle accident. He was later discharged on November 17, 1917. After the First World War Berkeley returned to his family and previous profession. He died in Smith's Falls, Ontario on 13 August 1967.

Campbell, Charles Donald, O.L.S.

Charles Donald Campbell was born on 23 August 1889 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Donald Mcgregor and Margaret Lumsden Scott Campbell. He worked as City Engineer for the City of Belleville for seven years, but was also licensed as a land surveyor. He married his wife, Eva May Pickard, on January 6, 1914 in Waterloo, Ontario. On May 21, 1929, Campbell was travelling on a provincial highway, half a mile east of Deseronto, when his motorcar was forced off the road. He died instantly from cerebral injuries. As tribute to the bright, young engineer, City Hall closed the following day.

Onesiphorus Bartley was born on April 4, 1815, at Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, to parents Onesiphorus Windle Sr. and Mary Ann Collett. He was baptized July 3, 1822 at Wiltshire, England. At some point he immigrated to Ontario, Canada. He then married his wife, Sarah Carroll, on September 1, 1844 at St. Pauls, Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario. In the 1878 Belleville Directory, his professions were listed as Provincial Land Surveyor and civil engineer. He died on September 28, 1879. His estate was left to his only next of kin - his son.

Edward Christopher Caddy was born on June 28, 1815, at Quebec, Capitale-Nationale Region, Quebec, Canada, to parents Colonel John Thomas Caddy and Hannah Goddard. He had 12 siblings. Throughout his career he was employed as a Provincial and Dominion Land surveyor. He surveyed various lands in Ontario. He married Sarah Playter Rogers, in 1856. They had 9 children. Caddy died on September 26, 1897, at Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario.

Fred Webster was born on September 19, 1892, at York, Ontario, to parents Fred F. Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Cobb. Throughout his career he was employed as an Ontario Land Surveyor.
He married his wife, Emily Lala Alford, on September 3, 1919, at Carleton, Ontario and died on August 14, 1962.

George Simpson was born on October 11, 1842, to parents Hilda Platt and Benjamin Simpson, at Hallowell, Prince Edward, Ontario. He officially registered as a Provincial Land Surveyor on October 7, 1864, and relocated to Belleville, Ontario. In 1873, he married Emma Ross of Picton, Ontario. He died on January 8, 1905 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Charles Shaw was born on November 11, 1854, to parents Margaret and Alexander, at Oak Hill, Toronto, Ontario. He married Ida Laura Cathlene Jones, at Trenton, Ontario, on March 14, 1883. They soon relocated to Wellington, Prince Edward, Ontario. Throughout his career, Charles worked as a Provincial Land Surveyor and as a Civil Engineer, with private and government firms. After relocating again, this time to British Columbia, he was employed as a Captain of a prisoner of war camp. He died on May 9, 1942 at Saanich, British Columbia.
