Quinte Morning Music Club

The Quinte Morning Music Club was a social organization established in the 1960s as a way of sharing information about music and musicians. The group met at the houses of its members, who would put on a programme of recorded music for the entertainment and education of their fellow club members. The group disbanded in 2019.

Don Boyle was an enthusiastic family historian who was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1927 and died in Brantford, Ontario in February 2019. He was descended from James Boyle (1812-1900) who immigrated to Canada from Belfast, Ireland and settled in Belleville.

Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan

Remedial Action Plans are coordinated by Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Since 1997, recommended actions have been implemented by members of the Bay of Quinte Restoration Council.

Aselstine, Walter

Walter Aselstine was born in Trenton, Ontario, on 23 April 1888, the child of Adelbert Aselstine and Lucy (Wallace). The family moved to Belleville in around 1898 and operated a stage coach business between Belleville and Trenton. Walter Aselstine drove the first motor bus operated by the company. Buses ran between the station and the Hotel Quinte and from Belleville to Marmora and Tweed.

Walter Aselstine was a trombonist who played in the orchestra at the Griffin Opera House and was the sound effects man for silent pictures. He played in the Belleville Municipal Band, the Toronto Kilties Band, Odd Fellows Band and military bands including the Princess Pats and the Shrine Band in Toronto. He was a member of the Commodores orchestra and played on excursion boats on the St. Lawrence River. He was a member of Moira Lodge No. 11 and of Christ Church in Belleville. He married Mae Oliphant and the couple had one son and one daughter. He died in Toronto on 27 February 1968.

Wharf Street Debating Club

The Wharf Street Debating Club began as a working class men's club in the Foster Ward area of Belleville, Ontario. At the time of municipal elections the club runs a 'Bun Feed', at which prospective candidates address the group. For many years, women candidates were admitted only to give their speech, then had to leave the room. The exclusion of women from the club continued until November 1988, when Julia Drake crashed the bun feed, dressed as a man. After that, the event became open to all.
