The Belleville Weavers Guild was established in February 1956 by Hazel Hayes, Ida Godden, Florence Ayling, Helen Sulman, Lil Watson, Lily Moult, and Janet Gilroy. Its aim was to "further interest in weaving by sharing ideas and information and by planned programs.” The organization's interests were expanded to include spinning, felting, dyeing and basketry and the word Spinners was added to the name in 1982. By 2002 the Guild's membership had grown to 80 members.

Margaret MacKay was born in Zorra, Ontario on 10 July 1866, the child of William P. MacKay, a Presbyterian minister, and Amelia Jane (Youngs). She married William Sharpe MacTavish, also a minister in the Presbyterian Church, who served in St. George, Deseronto, Kingston, and Madoc. The couple had eight children. They retired to Belleville in 1922, where Margaret died on 23 August 1928. She wrote poetry, some of which was published by her husband after her death.

George Wishart was born on 18 December 1896 in Kinburn, Ontario. He studied entomology at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and in 1929 he moved to Belleville, Ontario, to take up a position at the Dominion Entomological Laboratory on Dundas Street. He married Lois Keatley on 5 June 1929 and the couple had three daughters. George was active in a number of organizations and charities, including the Belleville Children's Aid Society, the Moira River Conservation Authority and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He served as an alderman for the City of Belleville from 1958 to 1964. He died on 23 February 1970 at the Belleville General Hospital and was buried in Arnprior, Ontario.

Arthur Robert Jenkinson was born in Norwich, England in 1889. He married Maggie Prior in 1908 and the couple moved to Canada in 1911. Arthur joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in September 1914 and served overseas until 1918. He died in 1972 and was buried in the Belleville cemetery.
