The ministry was born out of the amalgamation of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism on January 18, 2010.
Sport was added and the Department became of Tourism, Culture and Sport in 2011.

In 1916, the Department of Public Highways of Ontario was formed and took on the responsibility of establishing provincial highways.
On April 1, 1937, the Department of Northern Development was created and merged with the Department of Highways of Ontario.
In 1971, the Department of Highways assumed the responsibility for Communications, which prompted it to be renamed as the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in 1972.
It later became the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario in 1987.

Herbert Alexander Campbell Osborne was a photographer active in Deseronto, Ontario, in the 1890s. He was born in Fort Erie on 15 December 1869 and died in Penetanguishene on 29 January 1943.
Manly Ostrander was the child of Isaac Ostrander and Clarissa (Ferguson). He was the Principal of the Deseronto Public School.
Henry Egerton Foster Ostrom was a teacher and evangelist minister. He married Mary Emily McCullough in Prince Edward County, Ontario, on 21 July 1886 and died in Greencastle, Indiana, on 20 December 1941.
