McKenna, Marjorie Gertrude

Marjorie Gertrude McKenna was born in March of 1900 in Trenton, the daughter of David and Nellie C. Bunnett. She married James Albert McKenna on October 4, 1916 in Belleville, Hastings County. She worked at Glanmore on a part-time basis in kitchen preparation. She was a member of St. Thomas Church, and died on January 30, 1994.

Wessman, Sigurd

Sigurd Wessman was born in Norway in 1885, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wessman. He married Olive Elsie Trueman, and they came to Hastings County in 1921 from Renfrew. He and his brother ran the Belleville Electric and Stamping Co., initially making tools and dyes. In 1932 they moved to Deseronto where the business was called Redi Heat Electric Appliance Co., running to 1964. Mr. Wessman was on the Deseronto town council for two years and served as mayor for five years. During the Second World War the factory produced gear shifts, ammunition boxes and flame throwers. He and his wife moved back to Belleville in 1962. He died on July 12, 1982 in his 97th year.

Wessman, Olive Elsie

Olive Elsie Wessman (Trueman) was born on November 14, 1893 in Toronto, the daughter of William Henry Trueman and Margaret Ann Swinarton. She married Sigurd Wessman and they lived for most of their married lives in Belleville and Deseronto. Her husband was a factory owner, producing electric appliances. Olive Elsie Wessman died on April 25, 1987 in her 94th year. Her husband predeceased her in 1982.

Forneri, Cosford Chalmers

Cosford Chalmers Forneri was born in Belfast, Ireland, on 5 September 1842, the child of James (Giacomo Felice Carlo) DeForneri and Elizabeth Susannah Wiles. The family arrived in Nova Scotia in 1851 and moved to Toronto in 1853. Cosford became a Provincial Land Surveyor in 1864 and moved to Madoc, Ontario. He married Isabell Agar in 1868. Forneri died at Rat Portage [now Kenora], Ontario, on 15 August 1880.

Hanna, Edith Charlotte

Edith Charlotte Hanna was born in Wales on August 22, 1905 and immigrated to Canada in 1913. She was the daughter of Ebenezer and Edith Kate Cooke and one of eleven children. Her sister Ethel Mildred McGuire also lived in Belleville. On June 6, 1923, she married John Herbert Hanna in Belleville. Edith Hanna was a member of Christ Church and of the Minerva Chapter of the Eastern Star and White Shrine. She died on September 15, 1981 in Belleville.

Myrtle Winnifred Peck was born on March 21, 1894, the daughter of James Sherwood Peck and Mary Jane Wilson. She was a member of Calvary Temple and was a public school teacher at Queen Victoria for many years followed by Prince Charles for one year and finally Queen Mary for the last five years of her career. She died on April 5, 1983.

Emma Isabel Winter was born on May 4, 1888 in Hastings County, daughter of Charles Edward Bishop and Kate Riley. Her father established the company of Bishop Seeds in Belleville. She married George Edward Winter on June 24, 1922 in Belleville. Isabel Winter died on March 13, 1980.

Walter Frederick Reid was born in Sidney Township, Hastings County on August 9, 1904, son of Franklin Reid and Janie Faulkes. He married Lena Grace Sharpe on August 15, 1933. He was the owner and co-founder of Reid's Dairy in 1910. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Rameses Shrine Club of Toronto, Belleville Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge, Eureka #282, GRC, King Baldwin Preceptory, and Royal Arch Mason. He was associated with junior hockey in the 1940s and 1950s in Belleville and was a member of the Kinsmen Club. He died on January 1, 1993.

Jessie Irene Weir was born on April 6, 1904 in Sidney Township, Hastings County, the daughter of David Russell and Emma Watson. She became a teacher and taught for five years in Point Anne, five years at King George School in Belleville and one year in Thurlow, No. 4. Her teaching career ended when she married George Vernon Weir.She was a lifetime member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Belleville. She died in Picton in March of 1999. Her funeral was held in the church on March 12, 1999.

Amelia Elizabeth Usher was born on March 1, 1881 in Cushing, Quebec, the daughter of James and Louisa Watson. She was married to Edward Owen Keatley in 1904, and after he died, to Reverend William Usher. She visited her daughter Lois Wishart frequently in Belleville. Mrs. Usher was active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union at the national and provincial levels. She was a member of St. Mungo's Church in Cushing, Quebec, and died on November 11, 1980 in Stirling, Hastings County.

Edith Mary Bristol was born in Norwich, England in 1885, the daughter of Charles Docksey and Louisa H. Crocker. The family moved to Hespeler, Ontario, where she and her siblings got work at Forbes Mill. She went to Vancouver for a holiday and that is where she met and married her husband, Austin Wellington Bristol. They were married on October 7, 1977. Moving east, they bought a farm at Mountain View where they farmed for twenty-five to thirty years. Mrs. Bristol was a member of St. Thomas Anglican Church and a member of the Women's Guild there. She was also a fifty-year member of Quinte Chapter 59 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She died on October 7, 1977.

Judge Jacob Carroll Anderson was born on January 11, 1902 in Bancroft, the son of Rev. Thomas H. P. Anderson and Lottie H. Cook. He went to high school in Colborne, Ontario, taking his senior matriculation in Napanee. He worked as a County Court judge for many years in Belleville, Ontario. His wife was the former Rhoda Mary Bowles. Judge J.C. Anderson died on November 15, 1983 in Oakville, Ontario.

Margaret Joy Fletcher Nichols

Margaret Joy Nichols was born in Hamilton Township near Cobourg on August 12, 1891, the daughter of John Grandy Nichols and Maude Boulster. She taught school in Brighton, Colborne and Cobourg before coming to Belleville in 1933 where she opened and Quinte Book and Gift Shop, operating it until 1971. Joy Nichols was a charter president of the Belleville Business and Professional Club and a member of both the Naturalist Club and the Horticulture Club. She died on October 19, 1987.

Braidwood, Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn Braidwood was born in Belleville on June 28, 1905, the daughter of Stephen Dunbar Lazier and Florence May Lingham. She attended St. Agnes School in Belleville, Bishop Strachan School in Toronto, Belleville Collegiate and Ontario Business College in Belleville. Gwen Lazier achieved fame when she responded to the request of the Belleville mayor, W.C. Mikel to ride a horse to Washington, D.C. to advertise the 140th anniversary of the landing of the Loyalists in the Quinte area. She delivered invitations in towns all the way to Washington, offering one to President Calvin Coolidge on the White House grounds. Her ride was recorded in newspapers in Canada and the United States. Gwen Lazier later worked as a stenographer in Toronto and married Jack Braidwood after the Second World War. They retired to the Quinte area in 1965. Gwendolyn Braidwood died in Belleville on October 5, 2007.

Gustave Albert Freeman was born in Aurora, Illinois on January 30, 1898, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Freeman. He established the Canadian branch of the Stephens-Adamson Division (conveying equipment) of Allis-Chalmers Canada Ltd. He married Mildred Jean Roblin on June 5, 1930. Mr. Freeman was a member of the Rotary Club and Belleville Club. He was a director of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He died on February 19, 1977.
