Smith, Sarah Almina

Sarah Almina Smith was born on August 15, 1902 in Sidney Township, the daughter of James Albert Stapley and Annette Eggleton. She married John Roy Wilson on March 8, 1922; Alfred Lake on August 20, 1941; and Franklin Smith on June 17, 1953. She died on November 9, 1987 in Belleville, having formerly lived on RR 4 Stirling, Hastings County.

Leslie, James Bryson

Bryson Leslie was born on July 5, 1920, in Belleville, the son of William Malcolm Leslie and Bertha Jeanette Donaldson. While in England during the Second World War, he married Ardith Everett, a nursing sister. His father founded Leslie's Shoe Store on Front Street in Belleville where Bryson Leslie worked until 1940 when he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was sent overseas to train at Sandhurst Military College in England. Following his training, he received his commission and served with the Governor General's Foot Guard Regiment. After the war, Bryson Leslie returned to Canada and rejoined his father's shoe retail business, later continuing to run it with his brother, Donald. He was an active member of Bridge Street United Church holding numerous positions including chairman of the congregational board. Bryson Leslie was on the board of the Belleville Family YMCA and Salvation Army, past member of the board of governors of Albert College, a past director of the Belleville Cemetery Board and past director of the Canadian Shoe Retailers Association. Mr. Leslie died on June 7, 1991 in Belleville.

Belleville Harbour Commission

The Belleville Harbour Commission was established in 1889 by the Harbour Commissioners Act, Chapter 35. The Harbour Commissioners and Mayor were to appoint the Harbour Master with the approval of the Minister of Marine and Fisheries. The harbour and Port of Belleville were afforded the ability to collect harbour dues in 1870 through a by-law enacted by the Treasury Board of Canada. After the charter of the Commission in 1889, the by-laws and regulations were approved by the Governor General in 1911 and they were carried forward in 1947. The Harbour Commission was dissolved by a Federal decision in 1978.

George Oliver Tice took over from Joseph Waddell in 1945. He was listed as Harbour Master in the 1959 Vernon's Directory of Belleville. Mac Smith held the position in 1961 and 1963, with Don J. Barrett in the role in 1972 and 1974. In the 1986 directory, the post was not listed, suggesting that the Commission had been dissolved by that date.

Scott's Church Ladies Aid

The Ladies Aid group was organized on 3 January 1924 at the home of Mrs J. A. Lott, Frankford, Ontario. The first president was Mrs Howard Dafoe. The group met on the fourth Wednesday of the month and had a yearly subscription of ten cents. The group organized social events as fundraisers for Scott's Church.

The Scott's Women's Institute was organized on 24 April 1919 at the home of Mrs. Rufus Spencer in the Frankford area of Sidney township, Hastings County, Ontario. The first president was Mrs. Nelson Beatty.

Kitchener's Red Cross Society

The Kitchener's Red Cross society was organized in the Wallbridge area of Hastings County and held its first meeting on 16 October 1917 and the home of Mrs. Nelson Beatty. The group made trench caps, bed socks and property bags for troops overseas.

Usher, Amelia Elizabeth

Amelia Elizabeth Usher was born on March 1, 1881 in Cushing, Quebec, the daughter of James and Louisa Watson. She was married to Edward Owen Keatley in 1904, and after he died, to Reverend William Usher. She visited her daughter Lois Wishart frequently in Belleville. Mrs. Usher was active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union at the national and provincial levels. She was a member of St. Mungo's Church in Cushing, Quebec, and died on November 11, 1980 in Stirling, Hastings County.

Wilkinson, Bertha

Bertha Wilkinson was born in 1891 in Hanging Heaton, Yorkshire, England. She married her husband, George William Wilkinson, in 1912 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. They immigrated to Canada, settling in Belleville, Ontario. She was a member of St. Thomas' Anglican Church. Bertha Wilkinson died on January 9, 1982.

Weir, George Vernon

George Vernon Weir was born in Leroy, New York in October of 1900. His family came to Belleville when he was about six. He played both hockey and basketball with Belleville teams. He was also a ball player with the Belleville Grand Trunks team, winner of Ontario championships in 1919 and 1924. He was married to Jessie Irene Russell. He worked in the Canadian National superintendent's office in Belleville until 1932, then joining London Life Insurance company from which he retired in 1960. Vernon Weir was a leading member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, serving 47 years on the church board of sessions. Vern Weir died on August 18, 1983.

Weir, Jessie Irene

Jessie Irene Weir was born on April 6, 1904 in Sidney Township, Hastings County, the daughter of David Russell and Emma Watson. She became a teacher and taught for five years in Point Anne, five years at King George School in Belleville and one year in Thurlow, No. 4. Her teaching career ended when she married George Vernon Weir.She was a lifetime member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Belleville. She died in Picton in March of 1999. Her funeral was held in the church on March 12, 1999.

Reid, Walter Frederick

Walter Frederick Reid was born in Sidney Township, Hastings County on August 9, 1904, son of Franklin Reid and Janie Faulkes. He married Lena Grace Sharpe on August 15, 1933. He was the owner and co-founder of Reid's Dairy in 1910. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Rameses Shrine Club of Toronto, Belleville Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge, Eureka #282, GRC, King Baldwin Preceptory, and Royal Arch Mason. He was associated with junior hockey in the 1940s and 1950s in Belleville and was a member of the Kinsmen Club. He died on January 1, 1993.

Reid, Leonard Finley

Leonard Finley Reid was born on August 15, 1898 in Rossmore, Prince Edward County, the son of Franklin Reid and Janie Faulkes. He was married to Erma Marie Champaign in Belleville on October 8, 1924. He became the co-founder and co-owner of Reid's Dairy from 1919 to 1960. He was a member of Holloway Street United Church and a life member of Belleville Lodge No. 123 A.F.A.M., GRC, Masonic Temple. He died on September 30, 1981.

Patterson, Frankie Louella

Frankie Louella Patterson was born on January 31, 1880 in Cressey, North Marysburgh, Prince Edward County, the daughter of John Henry Pringle and Almira Sheppard. Her husband, who predeceased her, was Charles Benjamin Patterson. She moved to Belleville in 1918, and was active in St. Thomas Church for many years and a Life Member of Eastern Star. She died on September 22, 1976.

McConnell, Archibald Shaw

Archdeacon A.S. McConnell was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland on September 5, 1899, the son of John and Maria Jane McConnell. He immigrated to Canada and later fought in the First World War, enlisting in Toronto. He was married to Mary Emily Rebecca (Ruby) Foy. He became rector of St. Thomas Anglican Church, Belleville in 1955 and Archdeacon of Ontario. He died on June 21, 1978. He is buried in St. George's Cemetery, Trenton, Ontario.
