Blackburn, Joseph Alger

Joseph Alger Blackburn, owner of Stroud's Jewellery and Gift Shop on Front Street in Belleville, Ontario, was born on Huff's Island on December 23, 1903, the son of Albert Blackburn and Annie Luella Huff. His father operated Stroud's for its Montreal owner for many years. Joe Blackburn took over as manager in 1932 and later purchased the store. Stroud's was established in 1872 and sold tea, offering trading stamps that could be redeemed for fine china. Joe Blackburn married Elsie Mae Wheeler. He was an honorary deacon and active member of Victoria Avenue Baptist Church. He died on October 21, 1975.

Hurst, Phyllis Louise

Phyllis Louise Hurst was born on March 1, 1909 in Belleville, the daughter of Charles Frederick Wallbridge and Ella Emily Lewis. She graduated from St. Hilda's College, University of Toronto, in the faculty of household science in 1930 and worked at Montreal General Hospital as a dietician. She married William Nugent Hurst on September 15, 1936. After the Second World War Mr. and Mrs. Hurst lived in Tweed for five years, returning to Belleville for twenty-five years after retiring in Wellington in 1973. Phyllis Hurst was a member of St. Thomas Anglican Church in Belleville. She played the organ at the St. Paul's mission church in Belleville for many years. A member of an association of classical musicians, the Presto Music Club, she also worked occasionally as a supply teacher at BCI. Phyllis Hurst died on May 18, 1985, at Wellington.

Canon F. Arthur Smith was in the Canadian Army Chaplain Corps for six years during the Second World War. His first parish as rector had been in Roslin, Ontario. He and his wife, Marjorie, and their children moved to Belleville when he was rector of St. Thomas' Anglican Church during the years 1945 to 1953. He was then appointed rector of Christ Church Deer Park in Toronto from 1953 to 1967. Canon Smith and his wife lived in Oakville, Ontario for his retirement.

Harry Sheridan Palmer was the child of Charles Sheridan Palmer and Corilla Louisa (Jines). He was born in Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario, on 22 July 1891. In 1908 he won the Trenton to Belleville road race. He married Minnie Elizabeth Simpson on 22 January 1913 in Trenton, Ontario and was working as a painter at the time of the 1921 census. He died in 1976 and was buried in Whitby, Ontario.

John Wesley Roblin was the child of John Wesley Roblin and Deborah Ann Rightmeyer. He worked as an insurance agent and was married to Anne Elizabeth Vanblaricom (1843-1917). They had one child, Elmer (1866-1948), who moved to Rochester, New York. John Wesley Roblin lived in Prince Edward County and died there in 1927. He was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Picton.

She married Alexander McLean Haig on 26 April 1941 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Belleville, Ontario. The couple had four children. Mary died in Belleville on 13 June 2004.
