Evans, John Walter

Walter Evans was born on April 10, 1870, at Belleville, Ontario, to parents Mary Ellen Henry and John Dunlop Evans (a surveyor and architect). He married his first wife, Jennie Leah Henry, on September 18, 1901, at Ottawa, Ontario. He later married Marjorie Miriam Struthers after the death of his first wife in 1925. Throughout his career he worked as an Ontario Land Surveyor and engineer. He worked with his father, John Dunlop Evans, at their company "Evans & Evans, Civil Engineers and Ontario Land Surveyors." After his father's retirement in 1928, the company became "J. Walter Evans & Co. Engineers & Surveyors." Evans was also a trailblazer in the steel and metal industries - placing patents on many of his electrical furnace inventions. He died only 8 years after his father, on November 6, 1938 at Beardmore, Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Aylsworth, Charles Fraser Sr., P.L.S.

Charles Fraser Aylsworth was a land surveyor for the Ontario government. Most notably he surveyed what would become Carlow Township, paving the way for settlement. He was born on 5 March 1834, the son of Robert Aylsworth, a farmer, township clerk, and Methodist preacher while his grandfather was MPP for Lennox. Charles' son, who shared his father's name was also a noted surveyor of the region during the early 1900s. In 1861, he married Elizabeth Gillespie in Stratford. He lived in Madoc, Ontario until his death on 27 June 1911.

Emerson, John, P.L.S.

John Emerson was born near Clones, Ireland on January 16, 1799. He learned the skill of surveying at a young age while still in Ireland. He immigrated to Canada in 1832, settling on a farm in Tyendinaga Township, near Roslin with his sister, Anne. He never married. Throughout his surveying career, he mapped the counties of Hastings, Prince Edward, Northumberland and Lennox and Addington as a Provincial Land Surveyor. He died on February 24, 1884 and was buried in Roslin, Ontario.

Thomas S. Ransom was a Provincial Land Surveyor who was active in the Hastings County area during the 1960s. His father, John Thomas Ransom, was also a provincial surveyor in the area.

Steele, Gerald (Jerry) Francis, O.L.S.

Jerry Steele was born in London, Ontario, on September 13, 1929. He was a veteran of the Korean War and had a career as an Ontario Land Surveyor. His wife was Micheline Juliette Alarie. They had four children. Jerry died on September 30th, 2003, at the age of 74, in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Bews, David Matthew, O.L.S.

David Matthew Bews was born on May 20, 1932 in Belleville, Ontario to parents Douglas and Aline Bews. He attended Queen Alexandra elementary school and Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. In 1951, he moved to Kingston, Ontario where he earned his BSc in Civil Engineering at Queen's University. After graduating, Bews joined the Ontario Department of Highways and became an Ontario Land Surveyor. He married Ethel Green on June 8, 1963. He died in Belleville on March 28, 2017.

Lloyd Parker was born in 1937. He graduated from Queen's University in 1958 with a degree in Engineering Physics. He worked as on Ontario Land Surveyor (O.L.S.). He married Wendy Stewart on May 4, 1974. He died in Perth, Ontario on May 3, 2014.

Leighton Adelbert van Skiver was born on December 4, 1874 at Sophiasburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario, to Dutch parents John van Skiver and Elizabeth Way van Skiver. He married Eleanor Francis Jones on March 12, 1919 at York, Ontario. They had two children - George Leighton and Lois Lorraine. Throughout his career he worked as an Ontario Land Surveyor. He died on March 27, 1949 at the age of 74.

Beatty, Frank Weldon 'Weary', O.L.S.

Frank Weldon Beatty received his Ontario Land Surveyor’s licence in 1920. He eventually joined his brother Herbert, also an Ontario Land Surveyor, in private practice at Pembroke. They carried out extensive surveys in the Ottawa valley and northern Ontario. Beatty also participated in government affairs - holding the position of Pembroke's Mayor, and later, Surveyor General from 1946 until 1962. He died on 13 October 1965.

Drewry, William Stewart, P.L.S.

William Drewry was born on January 20, 1859, at Belleville, Ontario, to parents John Burnham Drewry and Glorianna Climie. He was apprenticed to Evans and Bolger in 1879 and qualified as an Ontario Land Surveyor (1882), and a Dominion Land Surveyor (1883). Throughout his career he surveyed with several government departments, railways and private firms. In 1884, he married Clare Lillian Hazard. He died on December 2, 1939 in Victoria, British Columbia.
