Women's Christian Association

The Women's Christian Association in Belleville, Ontario, held its inaugural meeting on 18th November, 1879. It was formed with the aim of establishing a hospital in the city, and a home for the aged. The organization was incorporated in 1907. Work started on the construction of the hospital in June 1884. In 1948 the Association turned ownership of the hospital over to the City of Belleville. The Association continued to fund healthcare related projects until 2018, when it was wound up, donating its remaining funds to Quinte Health Care toward the renovation of the Maternal Child Program at Belleville General Hospital.

Wishart, Lois Christina

Lois Wishart was a resident of Belleville, Ontario and an active volunteer in the community. She married George Wishart in Pointe-Fortune United Church on 5th June 1929 in Quebec. She was president of the Women's Study Guild in Belleville several times in the history of that organization and looked after the group's archives when it was disbanded.

George Wishart was born on 18 December 1896 in Kinburn, Ontario. He studied entomology at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and in 1929 he moved to Belleville, Ontario, to take up a position at the Dominion Entomological Laboratory on Dundas Street. He married Lois Keatley on 5 June 1929 and the couple had three daughters. George was active in a number of organizations and charities, including the Belleville Children's Aid Society, the Moira River Conservation Authority and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He served as an alderman for the City of Belleville from 1958 to 1964. He died on 23 February 1970 at the Belleville General Hospital and was buried in Arnprior, Ontario.

Emma Isabel Winter was born on May 4, 1888 in Hastings County, daughter of Charles Edward Bishop and Kate Riley. Her father established the company of Bishop Seeds in Belleville. She married George Edward Winter on June 24, 1922 in Belleville. Isabel Winter died on March 13, 1980.

Thomas Wills was born in Newfoundland in 1826. He was the County Treasurer for Hastings County and lived on Church Street in Belleville, Ontario. He married Anna Maria LeVesconte and they had eight children from 1853 to 1867. Thomas died on 11 March 1907.
